If you visit a website and see a padlock icon next to the address in your browser, that padlock indicates the presence of an SSL certificate. If you see a warning that says “Not Secure,” the website does not have one. For business owners, understanding what this distinction means and why it matters for both security and customer trust is increasingly important.
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between a visitor’s browser and your website, ensuring that any data transmitted contact form submissions, login credentials, payment information cannot be intercepted by a third party. Without this encryption, data sent through your website travels in plain text that anyone with the right tools on the same network can read.
Online users have become increasingly aware of security risks. When a potential customer sees a “Not Secure” warning on your website, a significant proportion of them will leave without taking any action even if the warning appears on a page that does not collect any sensitive information. The warning undermines trust in the entire website, not just the page where it appears.
Google has confirmed that HTTPS the secure version of HTTP that SSL certificates enable is a ranking factor in its search algorithm. Websites without SSL certificates are penalised in search rankings relative to equivalent websites that have them. For businesses investing in SEO, operating without an SSL certificate is working against your own efforts.
Installing an SSL certificate is not the end of the process. Proper implementation requires ensuring that all pages on the website are served over HTTPS, that there are no mixed content warnings from insecure elements on otherwise secure pages, and that the certificate is renewed before it expires. TMR Concept handles all of this as part of our web security services.
