Web accessibility the practice of designing and building digital products that can be used by people with disabilities is a topic that receives relatively little attention in Nigerian web development conversations. This is partly because it is perceived as a compliance concern relevant primarily in regulated Western markets, and partly because the commercial case for accessibility investment is not widely understood. Both perceptions are incomplete. The World Health Organisation estimates that over a billion people globally live with some form of disability and in Nigeria, that represents a population with purchasing power and digital ambitions who are being systematically excluded by websites and applications that were not built with their needs in mind. This article makes the case for accessibility as both the right thing to do and the commercially intelligent thing to do.
Web accessibility is not a single feature or a post-development checklist item. It is a design and development philosophy that considers the full range of human ability from the earliest stages of a project. In practice, it involves ensuring that all non-text content has text alternatives that screen readers can interpret. That colour contrast between text and background meets standards legible to users with visual impairments. That all functionality is accessible via keyboard as well as mouse or touch. That forms and interactive elements provide clear error messages and guidance. That multimedia content has captions and transcripts. And that the site’s architecture and navigation is logical enough to be navigated effectively by users who experience it through assistive technology rather than visually.
One of the most compelling commercial arguments for web accessibility investment is its direct relationship to search engine optimisation performance. Many of the technical practices that make a website more accessible to users with disabilities also make it more readable and indexable by search engine crawlers. Alt text on images improves both screen reader accessibility and image search performance. Semantic HTML structure that enables keyboard navigation also provides the content hierarchy that search engines use to understand and rank page content. Transcripts for video content provide the text-based content that search engines can index from media that they cannot otherwise interpret. Accessibility investment and SEO investment are frequently the same investment.
For Nigerian businesses targeting a broad consumer audience, accessibility investment opens the digital doors to a population that is currently being systematically underserved. Nigerians with visual impairments who use screen readers, Nigerians with motor impairments who navigate by keyboard, Nigerians with cognitive differences who benefit from clear, simply structured content these are real people in a significant and growing market who are actively trying to engage with the digital economy. Businesses that make their digital presence accessible to this audience gain access to a market segment that most competitors are inadvertently excluding.
